Confirmed from Wilson's Creek National Battlefield's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Well-preserved Civil War battlefield with a visitor center displaying war-era images & objects.
What runners say about Wilson's Creek National Battlefield
“The national park is so well-maintained, and the attendant at the visitor center was extremely helpful.”
“A lot of history and information to take in along with beautiful views and bountiful wildlife.”
A really nice National Park. A lot of history and information to take in along with beautiful views and bountiful wildlife. Plenty of nicely maintained walking trails to different exhibits. A great place to bring the family for the day with an opportunity to learn a little American history in the local area.
Super clean park with a great visitors center. I watched the 20 minute movie before heading out on the 5 mile loop to the sites and trails. It gave me a greater sense of what took place as I made each stop. If I lived closer I could see myself biking and hiking it often. Beautiful landscape with a story to tell.
Great place to go for hiking. I really enjoyed learning the history of the Wilson Creek battle and the area. I didn't realize how much historical stuff outside of the battle occurred here. Great place to visit.
Today we hiked the Old Wire Trail at Wilson Creek National Battlefield. We wanted to sell our car in Springfield so we looked for a trail near by. 🤗 There are quite a few trails there and many people taking advantage of the area for biking, running, walking, and hiking.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceCrushed gravel — the rail-trail classic: softer than asphalt, still smooth enough for tempo work
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
