Confirmed from Windmill Pasture Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Windmill Pasture Trailhead

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (8 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 3 mentions

“Beautiful trail starts out on the cool valley and then becomes steep as it rises quickly up the ridge.”

Black Mountain via Rhus Ridge is a 9.2-mile moderate to difficult level out and back trail. The parking lot at the trailhead is very small. There are only 8 or so spots available. There are no nearby areas where you can park and walk to the trailhead. So try to reach early in the morning to get the parking spot.

★★★★☆ — Arti , Dec 2021

Beautiful trail starts out on the cool valley and then becomes steep as it rises quickly up the ridge. A viewpoint is reached about half way up. At the top it connects with other trails. Beautiful views and meadows with deer.

★★★★★ — Mikel , Feb 2016

Great hike. It's about a mile uphill to the main "crossroads" up in the mountains with all the views.

★★★★★ — James , Sep 2018

Beautiful hike with sharp inclines and high elevation. Leads to Black Mountain.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
