Confirmed from Arthur W. Butler Memorial Sanctuary's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Rugged park of forests, streams & swamp that is a prime raptor migration viewing site, with trails.

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (170 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 7 mentions

“Beautiful terrain of modest difficulty and surprisingly varied vegetation and rock formations.”

🪧 well-marked 4 mentions

“Well marked trails, a simple loop is the main trail, but diversity in the hike.”

🐕 dog-walking favorite 3 mentions

“Have been coming to this location for years and it never disappoints, dog friendly as long as they are on a leash.”

My favorite place for a quick 2-3 miles after work and before sunset. The red and yellow loops are a good workout with a nice variety of landscapes. Decent elevation changes get the blood following. Great way to destress after a long day. I like ending my hike at the Hawk lookout. Great views and nice breeze.

We did the red loop here and loved it! It’s very well-marked and easy to follow. The one downside is that some parts are very muddy, it’s unavoidable. Let’s just say our black and white dog came back all black!

What a gem of a preserve. We did the red trail loop. Recommend start going up Butler loop and go anticlockwise, and finish at the birdwatch station. Beautiful terrain of modest difficulty and surprisingly varied vegetation and rock formations.

This is the BEST QUICK hike in the area. Period. Is the right mix of challenge and easy for a 60-75 minute hike. Well marked trails, a simple loop is the main trail, but diversity in the hike. Not all up and down hill and not all fairly level. My favorite place for a quick afternoon hike!

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 9 mentions

“No street view of the parking area using Google maps, but I’ve gotten them to move the marker to the actual location.”

Plan your run at Arthur W. Butler Memorial Sanctuary

The practical stuff

  • AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
