Confirmed from Avalon Canyon's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Avalon Canyon
“You have to take water with you cuz the trail is long and steep it takes a while to walk down and even longer to walk up beautiful views very nice hike”
Easy access from South San Francisco or Daly city. A truly hidden gem with great scenic for a short hike. You need to do street parking then enter from a small gate. The slope is VERY steep though so be aware. PTL for such a wonderful natural wonder!
Easy to get down and up, very clean Trail, easy to parking on the street.
Classic quirky Daly City coastal access point. Steep but easy because it is paved. However you have to be extremely careful as there are numerous points where the road or the path lead right up to a quickly eroding cliff face. Stay back from edges!
Unassuming little trail right off the road, very steep decline and incline so it can be taxing, easy to trek most of it due to the paved road. To go all the way down after the road ends might be a little steep, have to climb a few rocks to go down to the actual beach.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfacePaved — asphalt or concrete. Fast and predictable, runnable year-round, and fine with a stroller
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
