Confirmed from Bearwaller Gap Trail - Tater Knob Overlook Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Bearwaller Gap Trail - Tater Knob Overlook Trailhead

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (124 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 6 mentions

“Parking is more than adequate for the current visitor traffic, and the restrooms are clean and well-appointed; there is even a convenient water bottle filling fountain.”

🏞️ beautiful scenery 15 mentions

“The drive up to the overlook is gorgeous, whether you approach from the Defeated Creek side or from Carthage directly.”

🪧 well-marked 5 mentions

“Coming back, it was easy to follow a side trail by accident instead of going back up the hill, but it was easy to find my way back to the trail.”

The entire Army Corps of Engineers’ Cordell Hull development is the best secret of Middle Tennessee - which makes the Tater Knob overlook the hidden gem! While larger parks within this unit, such as Defeated Creek and Salt Lick, steal the show (and perhaps rightfully so), this overlook and the nearby Visitors Center…

Great overlook, you can see the dam, lake and much of the landscape. Super short walk to the overlook. The gap trail is not bad but not really near the water.

★★★★★ — Jonathan , Nov 2023

Beautiful. Trail is rough so come prepared. Boots, pants, walking stick

★★★★★ — Jason , Jun 2023

Great hiking trail! Took about 5 hours to walk it at a easy pace and stopping 3 times to snack or just take in the views. About 6 miles one way. We went with a group and left cars at one end and drove other cars to the trailhead. If you don't you will have to walk back to your car another 6 miles.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
