Confirmed from Bernardo Mountain Peak's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Hikers can ascend to this high point via the Bernardo Summit Trail for panoramic views.
What runners say about Bernardo Mountain Peak
“Some really beautiful flowers and things to look at along the hike though.”
Nice hike or mountain 🏔 bike climb and amazing ride back down the hill. If you are mountain biking you can park off Sunset Drive just off Via Rancho Parkway and there is a trail that goes under the 15 freeway. Steep and technical climb that works it’s way up the east and the north side of the hill.
Great hike. Not many people on it compared to the main Lake Hodges perimeter trail. Hiking in from the Bernardo parking lot to the top and back will take 2-3 hours at a good pace. Some steeper spots but very few places where you will need to walk down semi-sideways for more traction.
The "mountain " itself is a very short hike. 2 miles up 2 miles down But you need to get to the trailhead and that adds a few more miles each way 👏👏👏 It's a good incline. The terrain is good for most part. Nice view from the top and always nice people there 👏👏👏👏
Speed walking and running it! It was easy. The only hard part is the dust that you can slip on. Just bring water since it gets hot. I went through 2 liters alone.

“I leave from the North County Mall trailhead which is located behind the Chevron gas station down from Hodges Golf driving range.”
“Steep and technical climb that works it’s way up the east and the north side of the hill.”

The practical stuff
- AccessHours vary — hours are not posted for this trail, so check before an early or late run
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
