Confirmed from Big Gulch Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Big Gulch Trail

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (111 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 3 mentions

“Great view, but it smiles like sewers sometimes .”

This trail is really nice! It isn't too hard for beginners wanting to get into hiking. It is attached at 92nd street park. There are also 2 parks here for kids to play and a few grassy areas where you could do other activities.

I was able to get over 4 miles in, round trip. It was a great workout, and lots of varying terrain. No spectacular views, or challenging crossings, but a well maintained trail that snakes through the forest. The trail runs through a ravine, and has some good forest scenery.

★★★★★ — Ryan , Feb 2022

I would rate this as an easy to moderate hike due to some steep areas on a few entrances. The trail is clean, and inviting. It allows you to become quickly immersed in the Big Gulch Forest almost immediately. There are a few starting spots so I'd check Google Maps for a full detailed layout. Neat little bridges.

★★★★★ — Jonny , Jun 2023

Nice park. Many trails here. Can choose based on your preference. Trails maintained well. There are many natural benches for sitting with nice views. There is a creek along the trail. Water flow seems less. The park has nice playground for kids and parking available in 92nd Street.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

⛰️ Hills / elevation 9 mentions

“Not crowded, the trail diverged in lots of different areas, so you could choose whether you wanted more or less elevation.”

The practical stuff

  • AccessHours vary — hours are not posted for this trail, so check before an early or late run
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
