Confirmed from Bill Chipman Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

“And while the landscapes are gorgeous, the trail also has an important practical use as a commuter route for cyclists between the two university campuses.”

Following the right of way of the old Union Pacific Railroad, the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail runs west from Moscow, crossing the state line and taking you to Pullman, Washington. Pullman is the home of the flagship campus for Washington State University, the second-largest institution of higher education in the state.

What a great trail for rollerblading /skates! We did not skate the entire trail but the first three miles from Pullman. It was a little confusing figuring out where it was safe to park due to the hotel parking signs. So I went into hotel to ask, and was relieved that it was okay to park.

Nice place to ride a bike, ebike, walk, roller blade, skate board, walk a dog. Slightly uphill towards Moscow. It's nice to get out into the wheat fields of the Palouse. We rode our bikes to Moscow, ID and then rode into the U of I campus and went to Chick-fil-A. Yummy, it was about an hour bike ride.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🛣️ Paved surface 6 mentions

“Seven miles long, the trail, paved all the way, carries you through bucolic Palouse scenery, parallel to State Route 270.”
