Confirmed from Buffalo Creek Greenway's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Buffalo Creek Greenway
“Great place to go for walks, great place to take the kids to play, great place to jog within confines of an area.”
The walking path is of satisfactory quality, blacktop deserving a four-star rating. However, it would benefit from the installation of benches at regular intervals, approximately every half mile. Google Maps depicts the entire greenway as the Smithfield Neuse Riverwalk.
Great place to go for walks, great place to take the kids to play, great place to jog within confines of an area. Usually pretty quiet and laid back.
A great paved walking, running, biking trail in the middle of Smithfield!! We visited it for the first time and honestly weren’t exactly sure where to go!! The “entrance” we chose was parking near the soccer fields and the workout equipment and following the sidewalk into the woods.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
