Confirmed from Canfield Mountain Natural Trail (West)'s own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Canfield Mountain Natural Trail (West)

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (94 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 4 mentions

“The views of Coeur d'Alene and the surrounding mountains off in the distance are really beautiful from the summit.”

🪧 well-marked 2 mentions

“Always a great hike, the trail is very well maintained easy to follow and one can use the challenging straight up Trail or use the switchbacks”

A tough hike, but worth it! You're literally going straight up a mountain. We gained close to 2,000 ft. of elevation in 1.5 miles!

I enjoy hard trails and this one was definitely a tough one. Straight line elevation gain and you have to dig deep in certain spots. The signage could definitely be improved. Be prepared for a LOT of elevation.

★★★★★ — Rani , Sep 2024

This is a great trail for casual hikers. It's a very short drive from anywhere in town, and has a few steep sections that can get your blood pumping if you want them to. Overall it's moderately busy, so if you're trying to avoid people, this is not the trail for you.

★★★★★ — Nathanael , Jan 2022

I'm not sure what the official rating is, but the elevation change is very steep, dramatic and provides wonderful views of Coeur d 'Alene area while the amount of effort required to enjoy it is rather great. If you have hip or knee issues I would advise you to avoid it.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🏞️ Scenic views 17 mentions

“It was definitely difficult for me because I'm not an experienced holder and the trail was quite steep but the view was SO WORTH IT.”

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
