Confirmed from Cliff Walk's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Path along a cliffy coastline dotted with opulent homes featuring ocean views.

Visited June 2025 | Walked ~2.5 miles The Cliff Walk in Newport is an unforgettable coastal experience that combines stunning ocean views with historic mansions and natural beauty. We spent around 2 to 3 hours walking a portion of the trail, starting near The Breakers and heading south.
The first half of the trail is marked as green - this section is paved and relatively flat, which makes it easily walkable. The road can be somewhat narrow, but the plenty of areas to skip ahead as need be There are many mansions and scenic ocean to view along the way.
A stunning coastal trail that perfectly blends natural beauty with historic mansions. The ocean views are breathtaking, and the path is easy to follow with some adventurous rocky spots. A must-do when visiting Newport for anyone who loves scenic walks and fresh sea air!

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms, water — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
