Confirmed from Cross Mountain's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

This park is a quiet place to sit and reflect on Gods grace and enjoy the beauty of our hill country. It's a bit of a rough walk up so wear hiking type shoes. The next time we come, we will try and catch a sun rise or sun set.

Lovely park overlooking the city. The incline to top is rocky and steep, would not recommend during wet weather or those with limited mobility. Otherwise views are breathtaking and restroom facilities available. Also pedestrian entrance is narrow but definitely appropriate.

★★★★★ — Alexandria , Mar 2021

Cross Mountain Park is located on a historic hill with an elevation of 1,951 feet featuring beautiful views, walking trails, a butterfly garden and picnic areas. In 1847 during the settling of Fredericksburg, a timber cross was found on the historic hilltop, previously used as a lookout point by Native Americans.

This park is a little gem near Fredericksburg downtown. We drove all the way to Enchanted Rock but due to day pass was sold out, we were re-directed to this park. To our surprise, it’s a smaller scale hiking but still brings nice view of the city and surrounding areas. We will visit this park again on sunny day.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
