Great summer spot with the swimming lagoon (though cold water), and we enjoy walking the animals around the large trails (though its natural forest, so do watch out for poison oak, ticks, etc if you go way out). They have a great walking/hiking loop as well. Lots of bbqs, picnic tables, and other amenities too.
It's a really good place for hiking. There is plenty of parking and it is free on weekdays. The hike around the lake is quite easy except around Twilight Trail which is a bit steep and narrow. The trail is broken by the San Leandro Creek where there is no bridge.
Pretty nice park area, I got a bit lost but once I was on the chabot-garin trail it was a nice hike up into the five canyons area. Very nice view once you get to the top. It can be a bit challenging at some areas.
Don Castro has great easy trails for walking. You can walk around the lake and sit on the benches. The water foul are ducks, blue herons. The picnic areas are clean and so are bathrooms.
