Confirmed from Eastern Promenade Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Scenic waterside trail that leads to a beach that’s dog-friendly.
What runners say about Eastern Promenade Trail
“It was difficult to get such a great view in Portland from the core downtown area, so definitely use this trail to get closer to unobstructed views of the Bay Area.”
“Beautiful, easy walk/(run/bike) along the harbor coast.”
I have traveled this trail both by foot 👣 and by train 🚂. Next to the Marginal Way trail in Ogunquit Maine, this is one of the best waterfront trails I have walked on! Google Maps actually takes you to the Marina entrance. The downtown entrance is further down.
Loved this park! Absolutely serene walk along the shore with views of the islands. They have food trucks there for food and they have small beach areas along with a place to rent kayaks. Great place to get fresh air, walk your dog, run, bike, paddle board, or just sit near the water and contemplate life.
Beautiful scenic walk along the coastline. It is a bite-sized walk that's great to take your time with. View of the boats and the bay. I saw some people fishing so I guess that's allowed. Apple trees along the grassy areas. Great place to relax and bike too.
Wonderful shoreline trail, boardwalk, beach and a park. A must visit when you’re in Portland ME.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
- Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
