Confirmed from Ellie Lane Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Hilly and rocky hiking area with a trailhead for Iron Mountain that's known for its scenic views.

What runners say about Ellie Lane Trailhead

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (92 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 3 mentions

“Our route was very scenic with views of rolling hills and flowers this time of year.”

Hiked from Ellie Lane trailhead to Iron Mtn. peak and then back the same route on Feb. 16, 2019. Just under 10 miles total. Following a few rainy weeks and several inches of rain, every little gulley had running water. So nice to see and hear water running everywhere - in contrast to the usual hot and dry chaparral.

Great way to access Iron Mountain trail system. NOTE however pin for trailhead is someone's private property. Trailhead is right off 67 on the right not at the end of the lane. Hopefully Google will change so people aren't driving up their driveways.

Love this hike. Parking is easy compared to Iron Mt. Be prepared for very rough rocky terrain. Out to Ramona Overlook and picking up Iron Mt trail to return via Wild Horse trail. 7.3 miles, about 1200' EG. Go EARLY to beat the heat.

★★★★★ — Kate , Aug 2021

The trail has many loose rocks.. wear hiking shoes and use poles. Bring lots of water on hot weather and use sunscreen because there no shade. I saw garter snake. This trail is more quiet than Iron Mtn.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
