Confirmed from Fireline Trail (Hickory Run)'s own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Fireline Trail (Hickory Run)

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (41 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 8 mentions

“This is one of the best spot to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage at its peak (pictures on October 8, 2022) if you only have very limited time to stay in Hickory Run State park”

From Fireline Trail parking lot, with an easy half mile hike, you will reach Lehigh Gorge viewpoint. This is one of the best spot to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage at its peak (pictures on October 8, 2022) if you only have very limited time to stay in Hickory Run State park

★★★★★ — Shaw , Nov 2022

Great hiking trail located in Hickory Run State Park. Combined this trail with the Skyline trail to make it a loop. Trail can be muddy in spots so make sure you have waterproof shoes if you go right after a rainstorm. Carry in and carry out. Parking area is decent but there are no bathrooms.

★★★★★ — Lish , Aug 2021

Very nice trail just over 2 miles in length. Some decent ascents with the expected descents, but nothing too severe. Good views of the Lehigh River and the gorge. Plenty of intersecting trails to connect.

★★★★★ — Alan , Dec 2017

Excellent difficult rated hike. Within the first .5 miles, you have a beautiful scenic overlook of the river. Then it starts to get difficult. The hike was an "out and back trail" for a total of 4.7 miles. It had three up and down portions of the trail but overall had a 300-foot elevation drop.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
  • At the trailheadparking, water — reported by runners
  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
