I hiked the Tramway Trail to the La Luz Trailhead and back. Good views and less foot traffic coming from Tramway. It’s about 7 miles round trip with a scenic overlook about 2.3 miles of the way up the trail heading towards La Luz.
For information, Tramway Trailhead gives access to Tramway Trail 82 (southern terminous). It is located on Sandia Peak Tram property. Tramway Trail 82 is 2.6 miles long.
About 5 miles if you only do the tramway trail (roundtrip), but almost 9 miles if you do the tramway trail to la luz up to the mountain top (one way). Near the end are a lot of boulders to climb. Tough hike with lots of switchbacks, but the views are gorgeous. You can buy a ticket to ride the tram down.
Great hike! I started from the Tramway Trail and connected to La Luz—about 9.6 miles total. The switchbacks make the elevation gain manageable, and if you’re used to hiking that distance, it’s very doable. The rock pile section feels like it goes on forever, but the rest is smooth with incredible views.
