Confirmed from Granite Mountain Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Tough mountain lookout tower trail featuring meadow views and wildflowers, plus snowshoeers in winter.
What runners say about Granite Mountain Trailhead
“Great trail, well maintained trailhead bathrooms and parking lot.”
“Great views and worth the effort to get up the last push.”
When I first chose this hike, I wanted to see the lookout tower at the top. But this hike is so much more than that! The first 1.2 miles of this trail are rather well-manicured. It's a dirt trail. A few rocks across the trail. But someone's taken time to put steps, water drainage, etc.
First big hike for both of us and certainly a perfect day for a proposal too! Around 4,795 ft is where I popped the question as the Sun broke through the clouds. Perfect timing to warm our bones, but unfortunately the snow was too deep for us to make it to the the lookout.
Challenging but absolutely worth it! We took on Granite Mountain on June 22, 2024 — about 9 miles round trip with 3,800 feet of elevation gain. It’s definitely a tough hike, especially the last mile, which was still covered in snow.
Decided to do my first snowshoe hike today, solo, up Granite Mountain. Bad idea. Got to the parking lot around 10 am. The lot was about 60% full and a few more cars showed up while I was getting ready. Had my rental snowshoes and headed up the trail.

“I went on a wet foggy day so i could not get the views but on the other hand, i got a respite from heat and dust !”
“Also, I've heard this hike is popular, but when I got here, the parking lot was three quarters empty, but it was 8:13 am in the morning on a Thursday.”
“Steep and rocky most of the way but rewarding at the end.”
“Plenty of parking is available at the trailhead, along with restrooms.”
