Confirmed from Great Shiplock Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Great Shiplock Park
“You can step into an area where you feel miles away from the city with a beautiful little inlet by the river in the shade.”
Great Shiplock Park encompasses Kanawha canal, Chapel island and offers magnificent views of downtown Richmond. The shiplock served as a hub for tobacco warehouses and was renovated in 2013. The park offers fishing opportunities as well as trails, bike racks and benches. Get out there and explore.
This park is a hidden gem in downtown Richmond Virginia! Trails, the James River, interesting history, people walking and riding bikes, educational signs, trains, bridges, unique views of the city skyline and water features, bathrooms, flowers, nature & peaceful surroundings can all be found here along with easy.
You must stop through here to enjoy nature. The water. Walk the trails. Or have a picnic or birthday party. You can't camp here or have a fire or grill, but you can fish. And it's still worth it. Come solo, with your friend(s) partner/spouse or pet(s) it's fun for everyone. Kids and elderly included.
Great park. I love hanging out while enjoying nature here. The trails are awesome for baning out a satisfying walk. Nothing like pounding down a wooded trail with the bros while next to the water hearing the waves gently slap the shore.

Plan your run at Great Shiplock Park
The practical stuff
- AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
