Confirmed from Johnson Nature Preserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Johnson Nature Preserve

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (151 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 6 mentions

“As a person with severe breathing problems, I had to take a few breathers on the way back up, but this beautiful green trail is worth it.”

🌳 shaded & cool 4 mentions

“We decided to try this nicely shady trail with a stroller.”

🐕 dog-walking favorite 4 mentions

Excellent trail for short distance trekking. The trees are dense and hence any high temperatures outside is felt cool inside. The parking space is limited. There are help signs kept for walkers but there is good chance of getting lost still.

this is by far one of my favorite trails to wonder around on. there's almost always at least one deer to stop and watch and there's always an abundance of fungi to check out 😊 the parking lot is rather small but I've only been there while it was completely filled a few times in the past 4 years

Great little place for a short and easy loop hike. A full loop takes about 30 mins, and it's a little bit over a mile. You can hear the highway in some places but it's not very loud. Love to see deer out too.

★★★★★ — Heather , Sep 2023

A great change to the parks in the area. The dog really loved it. 4 stars because it's a bit small, but it expands into another nature preserve right beside it, though that preserves trail needs a bit of work

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🅿️ Trailhead parking 9 mentions

“Tiny parking lot that fits ~5 cars but haven’t had an issue with parking yet.”
