Confirmed from Kickapoo Rail Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Popular hiking and biking path running from Urbana to St. Joseph, along which limestone gravel replaced an old rail line.

Excellent trail in the Champaign area. Old rail line with limestone gravel now for the trail. Very long and great for walking, biking and running. Only issue I had was where to park to access the trail. Tip: Park at the Walmart close to the trailhead to access the trail.

After moving to town not so long ago, I discovered this trail recently and I’m absolutely loving it! It is generally well maintained with easy access. At first, I wasn’t sure where to park, but Google informed me that a lot of people use the Walmart parking lot and that has worked amazingly well for me.

I was looking for a place in the area for a ruck, and this trail came up. It’s level, straight, had smooth gravel, and well groomed. Sparse shade. I parked at the Wal-Mart, and made it past the large cemetery E/B.

Easy to moderate, unpaved. Lined with brush good windblown. Clean trail plenty of restaurants at St Joseph end Walmart at other. 14 mi round trip. Can b ridden in an hour.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🪨 Crushed gravel / limestone 5 mentions

“It's unpaved so the gravel can be slippery for bikes that dont have good traction.”

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • SurfaceCrushed gravel — the rail-trail classic: softer than asphalt, still smooth enough for tempo work
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
