Confirmed from Lions Lair And Sunshine Canyon Trails' own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

“Walk 1 min up the road and you’ll see the access/clearly marked stairs to Lions Lair.”

Fun quick hike. A good view at the top and not too steep of ascent. Wasn't crowded when we went at 8 am but wasn't empty either

★★★★★ — Jordan , Aug 2022

Beautiful trail, epic views, definitely recommend. I didn't spy any fountains or restrooms along the way. But it's a huge area with tons of paths so there could be facilities I missed. We approached the mountain from the valley to the East of the peak.

★★★★★ — Simon , May 2019

One of the most popular hiking areas in Boulder for good reason. Easy access. Steep ascents for a good workout rewarded by gorgeous views. A sunrise extravaganza!

★★★★★ — Bob , Mar 2023

One of the best trail routes from Dowtown Boulder. Follow sunshine canyon trail to the end ~2 miles from parking. Note Sunshine Canyon is Mapleton St as it heads into the foothills. Cross the road (Sunshine Canyon/Mapleton and turn left.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
