Confirmed from Lone Wolf Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Kid-friendly hiking area providing several trails, including the popular Lone Wolf.
What runners say about Lone Wolf Trailhead
“The trail offers great views of the river, then taking you down the hill to experience more wildlife and views of the water's edge.”
It’s a short hiking loop along the river—takes about 30 minutes to do the whole thing. Super easy trail, great for a quick stroll, and there are a few nice spots where you can catch views of the river. Perfect little escape not too far from the city.
Nature at its best !!! We love all the trails in the Castlewood state park, Lone Wolf is the best of all.
This trail has it all. Bluff views of the Meramec. Ferns, mosses, and mushrooms as you come down off the ridge. Plus the beautiful Kiefer Creek in the Valley. So many mushrooms!!!!!
Great views from the top and not as crowded as other trails in Castlewood.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceCrushed gravel — the rail-trail classic: softer than asphalt, still smooth enough for tempo work
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
