Confirmed from Madonna of the Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

National DAR Commission chairperson Arlene B. Nichols Moss was inspired by Portland, Oregon’s 1905 Sacajawea monument to commission twelve identical Madonna of the Trail statues to be placed in the 12 states through which the “Old Trails Road” passed.

Madonna of the Trail was wonderful! We visited in the evening, and the statue was lit up and beautiful. It is surrounded by roses and marks the beginning of Ye Bridal Path in Upland. We had visited another Madonna of the Trail in Albuquerque during our cross country road trip.

Historic Landmark #1028 on the National Register of Historic Places. There's a sign for it off the I-10 freeway. It's close to Route 66 (which is full of all kinds of roadside attractions).

This is an incredible Statue being 1 of 13 across the US. It is a big statue and the city of Upland uses a picture of this for the city seal. So it seems like the City of Upland is proud of this also. I came to help clean up around the Madonna of the Trail.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

Plan your run at Madonna of the Trail

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
