Confirmed from Menaul Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Menaul Trailhead

well-maintained 4 mentions

“The Trails at Tramway from Indian School To La Cueva Park Exceptional Hiking Well maintained By Forest Service and ABQ Parks Dept.”

🏞️ beautiful scenery 4 mentions

“You can walk/run the network of trails in the valley or hike up some pretty intense trails up to the top for great views.”

I hadn't heard of this place. I had asked someone where she liked to hike, and she said the foothills. So, later that day I looked at the landscape to see the hills, and found this park.

I'm new to Albuquerque, and what a cool experience this trail is for me. I moved here from Colorado, the desert landscape will take some getting used to, and it has its own kind of beauty. I'm an elder with some mobility issues, and I was able to find a fairly level path.

★★★★★ — Soltahr , May 2023

Looking for a good hike? This is a great place to to do just that, awesome trails to follow with tons of scenery. You might even catch some wildlife if you get lucky. This is a fantastic place to get away and enjoy nature and take in fresh air.

★★★★☆ — Terry , May 2021

Wonderful place to hike! Different levels of difficulty: easy, moderate and difficult. Enjoy wonderful scenery, all types of greenery and wildlife. Early Fall is a particularly good time to go. High 60's and beautiful skies. Not very busy on a week day. Bring water, no matter the time of year.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
  • Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
