Confirmed from Monocacy Hill Recreation Area's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 4 mentions

“Great hiking experience with well-maintained trails surrounded by picturesque landscapes.”

🪧 well-marked 3 mentions

“Nice well-maintained trails that are mostly wide and well-marked.”

This place has some nice trails. We did the Monocacy Trail but also added the River trail to go a bit longer. This is rocky but keep those knees up and wear some good shoes preferably hiking boots. We will visit again!

★★★★☆ — Monica , May 2020

Nice trails, wide and maintained. Diverse woodland, SE side has lots of autumn color. Gets busy around fall time, limited parking. If you hike in a loop fashion you can cover about 4.4 miles without repeating same.

★★★★★ — Jim , Oct 2020

Great place to hike a few miles. The view near the end of the Hill trail is well worth the rock climbing you have to do to get there.

★★★★★ — Phillip , Nov 2022

One of my kids learned in a geology class at a Berks County college that Monocacy Hill is actually the remains of an ancient volcano! The rocks/boulders at the top are the visible part of what was once the magma chamber.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
