Confirmed from Prineville Reservoir State Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Prineville Reservoir State Park

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (759 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 13 mentions

“We also checked out the restrooms because we do that too and must say, given the style of waterless facility, these were very very clean and well maintained.”

🏞️ beautiful scenery 7 mentions

“What wonderful place ranger O'Connor sure knew his stuff definitely be back and stay again in beautiful clean deluxe cabin .”

Absolutely gorgeous state park. The reservoir is low, but was also frozen over this particular weekend that we went. It was so beautiful at night as the frost was visible and the stars were wonderful! Not completely dark out though, I think the snow had an effect on that. The cabin was clean and cozy.

This was THE BEST camping experience we've ever had! It was just by pure luck that we were able to snag Cabin 2 while looking for a tent site and I'm pretty sure we got the penthouse suite version of a camping spot in the entire place.

Go for the views and the lovely dog park with the coolest view. Stay for the staff!!! This is in middle oregon and the high desert mountain area. The nature and the animals, flowers and bugs are very different. So be prepared and get educated. They got some really cool people working here.

Great campground for early spring or early/late fall. Plenty of hiking if you're willing to work for it. Try to get a site overlooking the reservoir and watch those sunsets. The smell of juniper. The occasional deer. Always nice people camped around. Clean restrooms and showers.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
