Confirmed from Red Bird Hollow Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Scenic trail (which was once an old railroad grade) through the woods, featuring creek views and dogs allowed.
What runners say about Red Bird Hollow Trailhead
“Great views of stream below, and good amount of things to see.”
Trail is basic gravel, about 6 feet wide. Washed out somewhat in one spot, but fairly easy to navigate around. Great views of stream below, and good amount of things to see.
Well maintained gravel trail (4.1 miles round trip, starting at Stephen Field and hiking until Given Road and back). Most of the trail is under cover of shade. A large wide creek runs along the trail. Only saw 3 other groups on a Thursday afternoon.
Love this trail so much I almost don't want to review it well in order to keep it to myself 😁
The trail has a lot to offer. However there’s some restoration, storm and flood prevention measures being taken which has somewhat affected its charm (for a fraction of a trail). It gives you a wilderness experience.
Trail conditions & character
“There were lots of pretty views of the water flowing over rocks.”
“It is a climb on gravel and it some places just dirt.”
“Better not to come with toddlers as this isn’t stroller friendly.”

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceCrushed gravel — the rail-trail classic: softer than asphalt, still smooth enough for tempo work
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
- Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
