The Sun Mountain trailhead is a short distance by car from downtown Santa Fe. Most of the surface is rock or loose rock mixed with dirt. Several sections of the trail are steep. Walking / running shoes should be worn if hiking boots are unavailable.
Good parking for 3-4 cars on trail head side. Maybe a few more cars on other side of road. The new access to Sun Mountain is great and was much needed. There are quite a few signs asking people to be quiet and keep their dogs on leash. All very fair.
Visiting from Florida. This was a nice out/up and back/down hike. Not that difficult aside from being aware of cactus thorns and loose footing on the way down. Lovely views and close to the city center.
Beautiful and peaceful climb with a view of the city and mountains at the top! There are some slightly steep spots. Wore sneakers and it was fine. A little under 2 hours at a leisurely pace. Passed many friendly hikers and dogs! Have to go down the same way you went up.
