Confirmed from Tourne Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Great park and community. Recently moved to the area with a 1 year old lab whose needs for open spaces and things to chase and smell are certainly being met here. Trails range in difficulty. Park is kept spotless by its users. Plenty of picnic tables and facilities to grill.

★★★★★ — Michael , May 2019

Great hiking/mountain biking/running. Birchwood Lake trail loops into Mountain Lakes and is easy to moderately difficult but can be rugged in some areas. You can hike the loop in about 1.5 hours. There is also a very steep trail to the top of Tourne mountain with spectacular views to NYC.

Nice park with plenty of hiking trails. Great view of the NYC skyline from the Top of Tourne. Take the red trail to the yellow trail for the view. Make sure to take the side trail to Mouse Cradle Balancing Rock.

★★★★★ — Bryan , Jul 2018

There are different levels of trails including ones for biking and walking with pets. There are many benches and picnic tables along the length of the trail. The trails are clean and well maintained. The playground is very engaging for kids. There are picnic tables near the playground too.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • Loop distance12 mi back to where you parked. Long enough for a real long run.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
