Confirmed from Westhaven Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Westhaven Trail

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (38 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 5 mentions

“While it’s not the undisturbed trail it once was, this is still a remarkable place and a well maintained trail.”

🏞️ beautiful scenery 4 mentions

“Not as scenic because at one point you go right by a completely unobstructed view of more new construction.”

🪧 well-marked 2 mentions

“The trail was not well marked to begin with and now most all of the signs have been knocked down or removed.”

I have hiked the various trails in Westhaven for the last couple years and love the rugged terrain, the many spring frogs, loads of birds and other animals. Truly a little bit of peace during uncertain times. The East/West trail has been cut, right in the heart of the trail.

This is a great trail. When I first pulled onto the street, I thought for sure I was in the wrong spot. But there it was, the trail head right across from a row of houses! The trail has lots of ups and downs. 5 miles, deep in the woods with 2 swings and a picnic table on the east trail!! Every trail should have swings!

Definitely my favorite place to hike in Franklin. It’s not an easy trail. It’s not paved at all. It’s over a few miles long and only fifteen minutes from downtown. If you want paved and short, go to Aspen grove.

Beautiful strenuous trails... If you do the outside loop you can get almost 2k elevation gain.. Great for training to hike the Appalachian trail! This review is for the 9 mile outside loop.. There are easier ways to hike here.. Lots of choices!

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🌲 Natural surface / singletrack 5 mentions

“Definitely more technical than I expected with over 800 feet of elevation over 4 miles but awesome none the less.”

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
