We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of Yankee Doodle Canyon yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Hiking trail featuring a picturesque slot canyon, plus rappelling opportunities.
What runners say about Yankee Doodle Canyon
“The slot canyon is cool, shady, and beautiful.”
Awesome beginner canyon. Some great rappels and down climbing. I would recommend it to anyone with basic canyoneering experience. We were a group of 4 and made the route in a little over 2 hrs. From car to car.
10/26/25. Normally, we would rate this canyon easy fun and fast. However, there is water that is over 7 feet deep in areas on the date listed above. This slowed our party significantly. When there has been recent rain, significant enough for accumulation be ready for water.
This is a rappelling hike. There is no way through the slot canyon without rappelling. If you don't or don't have someone in your group that knows what they are doing, then don't do it. You rappel down this (see pic). It took our group about 4 hours to do but we had 14 in our group. First rappel is about 25 to 30 feet.
This is a top pick! If you are a beginner in canyoneering this is the spot for you. There is only one mandatory rappel, but you can certainly make it more (4-6 I believe). Type in the directions into google and look for a small pullout on the right side. Park, cross the road and the canyon is 150 meters down the trail.
Trail conditions & character
“Some down climbing and the climb out the exit ramp is a low angle slab climb with drilled foot placements.”

The practical stuff
- AccessHours vary — hours are not posted for this trail, so check before an early or late run
