Confirmed from Zen Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Zen Trailhead
“Fun technical biking trail with beautiful views and interesting rock features throughout.”
Pretty moderate to difficult, extremely fun black diamond trail. Don’t go down Clavicle Hill, Acid Falls, or Three fingers of death if you’re not confident because you can get injured easily, If you are confident and ready for a challenge it’s definitely worth it to go because they are thrilling and super fun, I loved…
fun freaking mtb trails! Lots of sandstone and rocks. lots of elevation changes. challenging and fun. more advanved trail.
Zen Trail is amazing—but definitely challenging. Whether you’re hiking or biking, expect technical rock climbs, punchy obstacles, and sustained uphill efforts. There’s little to no shade, so the exposure adds to the intensity.
The first 3/4 mi are in the gap. The gap then opens up to ~3 football fields wide and the trail opens up into a plain. This is primarily a bike trail, so it might be fun to trail run in cooler weather. At 100+F I walked.

“This 6 mile loop with 700ft of elevation gain is a technical mountain bike riders' dream.”

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
