Confirmed from Black Mountain Natural Area's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Black Mountain Natural Area

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (26 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 4 mentions

“The top of the hill has a beautiful mountain laurel stand and a north facing view of the Green Mountains.”

🪧 well-marked 2 mentions

“The trail is well maintained and clearly marked.”

Around 3 mile loop - easy/moderate hike - recommend going counterclockwise for more moderate of incline. Great water features along the way and decent view at top. Well marked trail.

★★★★★ — Victoria , Nov 2021

Easy parking. Great moderate difficulty hike - it's a steep hill, but there aren't any rocky climb portions. The bottom can be muddy, but the trail is well maintained with bridges and boardwalks (except one small stream crossing).

★★★★★ — Henry , Jan 2024

The hike up Black Mountain was beautiful. The trail is well maintained and clearly marked. Thank you, Nature Conservancy.

★★★★☆ — Patricia , Sep 2019

Great trail run in the winter; looking forward to seeing the change to spring.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
