Confirmed from Buffalo Peak's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Fairly easy hike to a mountaintop vista via dirt and gravel paths.
What runners say about Buffalo Peak
“Utah is blessed with a lot of gorgeous hikes, paths, and trails that provide an excuse for locals and visitors to spend (lots of) time outside; in the mountains.”
“For a fit individual, this is an easy hike because it's so short.”
Gorgeous hike. It's a pretty uniform, medium effort hike until the very last 5 minutes of the climb when you get to the summit.that last bit of climb is tricky because it is a mix of shale rock and dirt which makes it very slippery. You should definitely not be wearing sandals for this.but the climb is spectacular.
No marked trailhead that I could find, but I just followed google maps to “buffalo peak” and right before I “arrived,” there was a place to park on my left. Hike was maybe 1.5 miles total. Beautiful meadows with flowers and the last little climb was loose rock and sand.
Beautiful drive up to Buffalo Peak with all the fall colors, but did not know there would a LONG rocky drive to the trailhead. The road starts off paved but then becomes very rocky. If I had known, I would of taken a truck so that I wouldn’t have been so slow in the sedan. Now would it be worth another visit?
A BEAUTIFUL HIKE. hard though. We clocked 1,400 feet of elevation for the total 4.47 miles. The hike up is steep and the trail is narrow, would not recommend for kids and dogs could potentially be risky as well. Park at squaw (kjhv) peak overlook and then the trail is to the left of the parking lot.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
