Confirmed from Chamise Peak's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Popular trail with picnic tables and shaded views from the summit.
What runners say about Chamise Peak
“Views in all directions but the views north over Shasta Lake dam to Mt Shasta and west looking down on the Sacramento River and out toward whiskey town are beautiful.”
“The top doesn't have a lot of room to sit or be in general but there is a picnic table underneath a tree that sometimes provides shade.”
“Dog friendly, people friendly and not too long at right around 4 miles round trip.”
Good hike! 5.5 miles round trip. It has a pretty great view of Mt. Shasta and Shasta Dam. The top doesn't have a lot of room to sit or be in general but there is a picnic table underneath a tree that sometimes provides shade. Overall pretty good!
Great hiking trail just a few miles from town. The trail is in great shape as it missed being burnt by the Carr fire. You climb up steadily to the junction and turn right to summit this little peak (maybe 700’ vertical).
An easy going hike, take around 1.5 - 2 hours up and down (with no stopping for lunch or anything). Beautiful views, easily one of the best hikes in the area! I have been at various times in the year, always well maintained and worthwhile.
One of the best quick hikes in the area. Hike up to a little peak maybe 5 miles including both ways I believe. See a neat 360 view of the area including shasta dam. Nice clear trail, no big step ups. My mini aussie loves it. Plenty of parking at trail head.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms, water — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
