Confirmed from Chipman Preserve-Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Free nature preserve with well-maintained trails, prairies, woods, and opportunities for birdwatching.
What runners say about Chipman Preserve-Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy
“Nicely maintained trails with alot of information and benches provided.”
“Beautiful trails for hiking and gorgeous Lupines in May and June.”
This is a very nice trail for being in the city. Many trail options to make every hike different. Usually not to crowded
Great place for a hike. Nicely maintained trails with alot of information and benches provided. Didn't see any bathrooms. The parking lot is large and well maintained.
These trails are The Best! Hilly, shady, full sun, trees and fields. There are so many twists and turns, it's easy to get lost, but not so hard to find your way back. As a runner, these trails are unpaved, so you need to be aware as to not trip on roots or uneven ground. But the hills are like nothing else in our area!
I was not aware that these hiking trails existed! Very nice informational guides along the trail, as well as a great amount of benches to atop to take a break and have a drink of water. Beautiful wildflowers dot along the trail. I visited in the early daylight hours. Perfect for a morning meditative walk.

Plan your run at Chipman Preserve-Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy
The practical stuff
- AccessDawn to dusk — the gates close, so do not plan a run that finishes after dark
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
