Confirmed from Eastbank Esplanade's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Urban park featuring a long floating walkway, plus a boat dock, walking & bike paths & public art.
What runners say about Eastbank Esplanade
“Great views of the center of the city from along the Willamette river.”
“It's a great place to run, walk, read, or bike to avoid busy roads and is easily accessible if you're walking distance from the river south of the Steel Bridge.”
The Esplanade is a wonderful place to get a look at the ever evolving skyline, and to take a close look at bridges and some of the working waterfront that still exists north of the Steel Bridge. Starting a stroll near the Hawthorne Bridge makes for convenient parking if you're driving to the area.
A great bike path on.the east bank of the Willamette...a bit noisy due to its immediate proximity to Interstate 5, but it is a very direct route with plenty of easy connections crossing the river to downtown.
Walking the loop around the river from the Steel bridge to the Tilikum bridge through the Eastbank Esplanade is one of my favorite routes in Portland. There is a Benson bubbler (drinking fountain) located just north of the Hawthorne bridge. There is some wild bum activity along the south end at times though.
Very enjoyable place to walk, bike, jog, run, hop, skip, jump, play and lollygag too. You could sit, eat, swim, fish, boat, raft, float, and skinnydip too. Also wonderful for reading, meditation, contemplating, and prayer 🙏😘.....
Trail conditions & character
“If you are moving northward, walkers are also rewarded with delightful views of the Steel Bridge, both from a distance and from the walkway across the lower level.”

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfaceMixed — more than one surface along the route, so check the segment you plan to run
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
- At the trailheadwater — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
- Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
