Confirmed from Esty and Hellie Stowell Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
What runners say about Esty and Hellie Stowell Trailhead
“Plenty elevation, excellent workout and beautiful views.”
“The trails were pretty well marked and color coated depending on the trail you are on.”
Today was the third time I did this hike in four weeks. The first time was windy and the second time mostly cloudy. A clear sky this morning led to a spur of the moment run back to Storm King, mainly to get some better pictures.
Multiple viewpoints! We went through the blue / yellow trail upwards then the bluebird trail on the way down. Recommend looking at the all trails app as it can be easy to get off path as the loop intersects with other trails. One of my favorite hikes in the area!!
10/2020: Large parking lot (free parking) with park map at start of trailhead. Initially we tried to park at the lot on Mountain Rd, but it was completely full. A sign directed us to where we ended up parking (see the pics below). No bathroom facilities on site. About 1.
I went here for a short trek over the weekend with friends. The views are scenic and natural. There several entry points. The one we took had a huge parking space and took us a while to find. You will get a bird eye view of Hudson River all along.

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
