Confirmed from Friends of Negwegon State Park's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (336 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 5 mentions

“The trails are pretty well maintained and we only saw a few other people.”

🏞️ beautiful scenery 16 mentions

“There is a small parking lot and a few vault toilets and it is a Dark Sky Preserve which has a great view of Lake Huron.”

🌾 quiet & peaceful 7 mentions

“I highly recommend this park for people looking to experience the wilderness of Michigan from the quiet refuge of a tent.”

For our first backpacking trip, hike was perfect. The hike in/out was quiet and beautiful. Of course there were bugs, but with the proper repellent, we sustained minimal mosquito bites. The hike took just under an hour, with some occasional stops to soak in the beauty.

Very nice place for backcountry camping. We stayed at south point #4 and is by far the most private. This site is right on thunder bay and overlooks a couple of islands. At night you can see the lights of Alpena in the distance. The beach is rocky, but there is a relatively sandy area to swim in. I'd bring water shoes.

This place is a true Michigan gem. It's lovingly cared for, wild, and scenic. Great swimming in many areas. The back country campsites are spectacular. They are primitive and remote....

Negwegon State Park is a wilderness exploration waiting to happen! Several miles of trails go deep into wooded area full of pine trees and Birch trees. There is a lot of beachfront to explore too, and dispersed campsites for people who really want to get away for a weekend in the deep woods.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
