Confirmed from Great Flats Nature Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Grass trail, boardwalks and woodsy paths winding past wetlands and a pine forest with wildlife, including birds, deer, rabbits, snakes and frogs.
What runners say about Great Flats Nature Trail
“The wildlife and scenery are beautiful and worth repeated visits throughout the season.”
“Easy access, clearly marked trails and lots of mother nature.”
“I like this place because it's a nice, easy walk and it's beautiful!”
This is great for a quick nature walk for people of all ages. (Toddling 6 month old to grandma.) We often hit the trail for an hour just to go across the street to complete errands. The new signage is great and even led us to a part of the trail we have never been to.
This is a really short trail but it's nearby town and has good phone service. The views are pretty nice and it allows dogs on a leash. If it's recently rained in the past few days the bridges are really slippery and there are parts that are straight mud so wear shoes you don't care about.
Wide, flat trails through woodland and boardwalks through marsh. Many of the trails are mowed grass. There are some wet places, including a couple places where I turned around rather than wading through ankle deep water across a section of trail.
I like this place because it's a nice, easy walk and it's beautiful! A few years ago I saw a bunch of Garter snakes which were fun to interact with. Also, I saw 3 Snapping turtles which was awesome! This year I saw a beautiful Deer that you could get a little close to!
Trail conditions & character
“The wildlife and scenery are beautiful and worth repeated visits throughout the season.”
“For the negatives, it can get muddy in certain areas and you can still hear a bit of vehicle sounds since its close to the highway.”
“As the name suggests it is relatively flat and an easy level hike for most people and even families with younger children.”
“A great place to walk in the woods with your dog or family that is nearby.”

The practical stuff
- AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
- SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
