We have not been able to confirm the surface, distance or shape of Great Island Trail yet from its own listing, the park's website or runner reviews — so those cells stay blank rather than guess. What is below comes straight from the listing and from reviewers' own words. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Great Island Trail

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (305 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 15 mentions

“Beautiful breathtaking spot for a hike or stroll of some of the most scenic sites of Cape Cod’s dunes, seaside forests, and bayside beaches!”

🌾 quiet & peaceful 4 mentions

“Amazing not crowded trail through dunes with breathtaking views of the ocean with secluded beach that stretches for miles.”

One of The Cape’s true gems. Great Island is absolutely breathtaking. A beautiful quiet and serene getaway with many spectacular vistas of both the harbor and the bay.

If you like impressionists masterpiece, you should probably take a hike here (too) - very likely I have made that assertion already, for somewhere else that I have visited, but still I must reiterate. I have visited here twice, one in early March (definitely winter), and one in late May (I would say spring).

★★★★★ — Wanyu , May 2025

Great trails and beautiful area. Dog owners beware, there were a lot of dead birds on the west beach/side at the end of 2024 (birdflu?). But I love visiting this area a lot! The best time to go/start hiking is about an hour before low tide, although a lot of the area is still accessible during high tide

★★★★★ — Maddalyn , Sep 2025

Beautiful area, lots to explore. The walk over the narrow strip of land to the island can be hard to navigate at high tide unless you're OK with getting your feet wet.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
