Confirmed from Great Western Cattle Trail's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Great Western Cattle Trail

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (21 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

Good place to learn about the western cattle trail & its short history , while looking at the mountains and air force base

★★★★☆ — Nsm , Jun 2025

This is a quick stop for a history lesson about the Great Western Cattle Trail. NO facilities, but there is paved pull off parking. Can be here less than a minute and continue on down the highway. For Geocachers, there is a Geocache at this location.

★★★★☆ — B , Dec 2016

A stop on the Great Cattle Trail and learn a lot of history about the family of the area. You can also watch the airplane take off from the air force base. As a good pull off area.

★★★★★ — Jason , Aug 2021

I was aware of the Chisholm Trail cattle route but didn't know about this one. I can't imagine trying to drive cattle all that way.

The practical stuff

  • AccessOpen 24 hours — no gate to beat, so a 5am or a 10pm run both work
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
