Confirmed from Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

👟 good for all levels 2 mentions

“Be cautious that even easy trails have quite a bit of rock and elevation, but if you can handle a bit of a rock crawl, the views are atunning.”

This is my favorite place to hike. My friends and I regularly drive in from Texas to go day hiking here because the views are stunning! There are so many trails to choose from, and each trail has it's own beautiful picturesque rewards.

Great nature and wildlife conservation! Entry is free as shown on google reviews. I recommend stopping by the visitor building first to learn about the park, I spent about an hour and then got some items from the gift shop. There are multiple areas for exploring such as holy city and some other scenery stops.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is such a nice, low-key escape. The scenery is beautiful in a very natural way, rocky mountains, open fields, and big skies everywhere. It’s also super easy to encounter bison here, they roam freely, and seeing them up close is pretty awesome.

We loved staying here for our short stay! Absolutely beautiful. Our site, 51-B, was nice and located next to a lake with a trail right from the site. Lots of wildlife: ducks, birds, deer and elk. The deer came right up to our area. We also saw several within the park, as well as elk.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
