Confirmed from Indian Kill Nature Preserve's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Indian Kill Nature Preserve

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (385 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🪧 well-marked 2 mentions
🐕 dog-walking favorite 3 mentions

“I brought along my dog and he loved it as well.”

If you are a novice, these trails are moderate with climbs. Take a walking stick/hiking pole, bug spray, and watch for exposed roots that can be trip hazards for youngsters. Take a good look at the trail maps because it can be confusing if you are unfamiliar with the area.

This is a great nature preserve. There is a lot to see and the terrain is very diverse. With that being said, it can be very steep and also very muddy so travel cautiously and consider the abilities of those in your group. There are a few spots in which the trail is a bit washed out and you are on the edge of a slope.

Great trail and would definitely suggest. Have to go back to finish them since I didn't have time to do the whole trail on my first visit.

Spacious parking. Offers a variety of hiking with lots of side trails . Some parts can be steep with an incline ; wear appropriate shoes and bring Bug spray . Blue trail follows the water . Did not see much animal wildlife during my visit . Plenty of shade spots .

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

The practical stuff

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • SurfaceNatural surface — easiest on the joints and the most fun, but expect roots, rocks and mud after rain
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
  • ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
  • At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
  • DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
