Confirmed from Jack A. Markell Trail New Castle's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Jack A. Markell Trail New Castle

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (52 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🏞️ beautiful scenery 6 mentions

“Mostly flat and paved, I like that it is scenic starting at the Riverfront and ending at Battery Park.”

A nicely laid out trail. It is safely isolated from motor vehicles, with just 4 street crossings; the ones for DE-273 and Boulden Blvd. have crossing-lights to stop traffic, allowing for safe crossing by pedestrians and bicyclists.

Thy have like 3 or 4 different google maps version of this trail. I guess for different areas. But started T the nature building. Rented a bike there. Made it to battery park. Took about 2 hours. I was so done. Almost didn’t make it back in time to return my helmet.

Put many miles on this trail. I'm actually on it right now. I love how you can connect from Old New Castle to downtown Wilmington straight pedestrian mode. Hey guys I'm all about walking.

★★★★★ — Golfulus , Sep 2024

Shaded trail through forest and wetlands, good for a jog or riding your bicycle. A few road crossing further north towards the highway, other than that a good place to run if you want to keep away from cars while you exercise or relax.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.
