Confirmed from Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
This 308-acre park features a Japanese garden, a workout course, athletic fields & scenic trails.
What runners say about Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area
“Hadn't been in this park for years, I was really surprised it is really clean.”
“I also saw beautiful trees, ponds, trails, flowers, fish, frogs, plants, bridges, resting benches, and other people passing by, exploring the area as well.”
“The hummingbird garden is absolutely magical—peaceful, colorful, and full of life.”
WOW. This place has everything. Tons of rare and uncommon birds. Views of the city and an MLK memorial. There is like no people there and tons of hiking trails. I highly recommend this place for bird watching, hiking, and other connections with nature. I took some pretty cool pics of the some of the birds.
For the $7 car fee entry, you’re offered a very expansive park area with plenty of amenities and tables available. Spacious fields for recreation in the lower and upper portions of the park (w/ a couple overlook viewpoints); plenty of nature to observe as you walk/hike around.
🤴🏿I wondered all the way to the Kenneth Hawn state recreational area after crossing the Mark-Ridley Thomas bridge by foot. I explored the area on foot by walking, jogging and hiking.
This location offers several smaller trails that can be combined into a larger loop, which is what we did. We parked on the street on one side of the park and made our way up and around, creating a full-circle route. You can customize your hike—make it short or long depending on your energy or time.

The practical stuff
- AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
- SurfacePaved — asphalt or concrete. Fast and predictable, runnable year-round, and fine with a stroller
- DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.
- ShadeNot reported. Assume some of it is exposed and carry water in summer.
- LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
- At the trailheadparking, restrooms, water — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
- Stroller / wheelchairReported as smooth and step-free enough for a running stroller or a chair.
