Confirmed from M. John Johnson Nature Center's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about M. John Johnson Nature Center

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (126 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

well-maintained 3 mentions

“Clean, well kept, beautiful place to go for a hike.”

🏞️ beautiful scenery 6 mentions

“Beautiful scenery with river views, paths carved into the rock walls, peaceful trails in the woods and often a sighting of animals like a 🐢 or a 🦌”

🐕 dog-walking favorite 4 mentions

“Jogging, cycling, strollers, dog-walking (leashed on the paved part but the trails in the woods allow them off leash if they obey verbal commands).”

This is one of our favorite preserves for walking and biking. It's right between Downingtown and West Chester and has three parking lots that you can use. The one by the historic covered bridge is often full, but you can find parking in the end heading towards Downingtown or by Skelp Level Rd.

First time here and we loved it. They have a very easy paved trail and then little side trails. The side trails are more difficult and range in elevation and terrain. We took it easy and did a portion of the paved then a short a trail through the cliff side. Our 2year old dog did really well on both sections.

Great paved (blacktop) trail that connects to a system of dirt trails through the woods. Jogging, cycling, strollers, dog-walking (leashed on the paved part but the trails in the woods allow them off leash if they obey verbal commands). Mountain biking in the woods.

I am a huge fan of this trail (and so is my dog). I like to bring all sorts of people here because of the diverse difficulty options; there's a path for everyone! Trails are well blazed for the most part.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

🛣️ Paved surface 14 mentions

“Bring your bikes or rollerblades, but beware of one or two mild, cold but longer inclines on the wide paved trail.”
