Confirmed from River Place Nature Trail Canyon Trailhead's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.
Park featuring a riverside walking trail with steps, elevation changes & picturesque views.
What runners say about River Place Nature Trail Canyon Trailhead
“Very well maintained place and the trail overall is not really that hard if you are someone who regularly hikes then it should be okay.”
“But it is very well maintained, very well marked trails and very very beautiful.”
“It is also very wood-sy —so very shaded which in Austin heat was a good thing.”
Whomever decided to design this trail really intended to make you work for the joy of being in nature 🤣. Inclines can be hard, inclines with stairs, hello burning hamstrings!!
I had the opportunity to visit this place last week and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very well maintained place and the trail overall is not really that hard if you are someone who regularly hikes then it should be okay. Pretty long trail though and if I recall correctly it is around 5.
This trail was definitely hard. There is an end at the finish line. But unless you have someone to meet you with a car you’ll have to go the whole way back. 2 of our ppl ended up not finishing and grabbed us at the lake.
It's a tough trail! Uphill, both ways! ;-) Really though. Expect to be out about 3 hours or more, depending on your level of fitness. Take time to stop and enjoy the scenery. It's beautiful. There's a LOT of steps! Bring plenty of water and snacks in case you get hungry. Especially water.
Trail conditions & character
“This hike is a pretty serious hike and is about 6 miles out and back with 1,200 Ft of elevation.”
“But it is very well maintained, very well marked trails and very very beautiful.”
“This is definitely not something to try with toddlers, kids not accustomed to exertion or adults not accustomed to exertion, without water for yourself or your dogs or sun gear.”
“It is also very wood-sy —so very shaded which in Austin heat was a good thing.”
“This is a really nice trail with some areas that are little muddy but otherwise the trail is very passable.”
“especially since the "average hiker" will take at least 90 minutes to get to the end AND then you have to go back because it's NOT A LOOP.”

- ShadeRunners describe real tree cover here — it makes a summer afternoon workable
- At the trailheadparking — reported by runners
- DogsWelcome, per reviewers. Leash rules vary by park — the trailhead sign is the authority.
