Confirmed from Robert “Dutch” Schultz Recreation Area's own listing, the park or land manager's website, and runner reviews. Blank cells mean we could not verify that fact — we would rather say "not reported" than invent one. There is no Easy / Moderate / Hard rating on this page on purpose: a one-word difficulty score tells you nothing about whether a trail suits your run. Surface, distance, shade and hours do.

What runners say about Robert “Dutch” Schultz Recreation Area

Pulled from public reviews of this trail (42 of them) — the things people bring up again and again, in their own words. Nothing here is written by us.

🌾 quiet & peaceful 3 mentions

“Very calm place and they have lights to play in the late evening.”

I live locally - and found that a lot of people don't know that it is here. To get there, you follow the signs to the Palatine Hills Golf Course - and it is right out front. There's a hill for hiking/sledding, a playground that satisfies kids under age 10, a few tennis courts, and easy access to the bike trail.

Been coming here since I was a kid. Usually a great place to sled in the winter. Decent area to hike and go for a relaxing walk. Bike trail is paved and will take you either towards Dundee and hooks right into deer grove preserve or going the opposite way towards the Palatine library and that water reserve park…

Somewhat of a hidden gem since this is at the entrance to Palatine Hills Golf Course. This park has a large sledding hill, pavilion, lake, tennis courts, basket ball courts and a play area for the kids. There is plenty of parking and the Palatine Trail runs right thru this recreation area. The park is free to visit.

Trail conditions & character

What this trail is actually like underfoot and overhead, taken from its own listing and from reviews. Each one links to every other trail with the same character. Busy or quiet is reported as a plain fact, not a plus or a minus — a runner heading out alone at dawn often wants company on the path, and someone running intervals wants an empty one.

  • AccessPosted hours — posted hours below; park gates sometimes close earlier than the listing says
  • DistanceNot reported. Trail systems often quote total path mileage rather than a single loop, so measure the route you actually want before you drive out.

  • LightingRunners report lights on the path — useful for pre-dawn and after-work miles. Lighting and opening hours are separate things, so check both.
